About Groniek

Historical Journal Groniek is an edition of Stichting Groniek and is published four times a year. De editorial board consists of history students of the State University of Groningen. Groniek has developed itself in the last four decades since it’s founding from a simple “school paper” into a serious scientific magazine with (inter)national reputation. A wide range of historical issues is covered by prominent historians from both the Netherlands and abroad, like Quentin Skinner and Hayden White.

Groniek devotes itself to subjects that are in the focus of the historical debate. The last few years this has resulted in exciting issues like 'The Imagination of Postmodernism', 'The Future of Historiography', 'Risorgimento', 'Damnatio Memoriae', and 'Political Theory'.

In the next year we will publish about the (ab)use of historical sources, big battles in history seen from the perspective of the defeated party, deathcult, and four hundred years of Dutch-American relations.

Groniek attempts to reconcile scientific ambitions with an accessible style by a combination of depth and readability. Groniek consist of five articles in which the theme of our issue is deepened from different points of view. Besides our theme section, we have a supplement in which we offer talented historians a chance to write about their subject of interest. In the supplement we have several features like 'Personalities', in which a historian can write about the person they admire or detest, or 'Historical Heritage', meant to provide historians with a platform to share their fascination for a certain place or building with our readers. Further more, we have previews of the latest historical literature.

Besides publishing, Groniek often organizes congresses and lectures. In this way we can subject our themes to a lively and historical debate.

The editorial board wants to know what you think of Groniek. So if you have any comments about our issues, our articles or our website, you can post these in our visitor’s book.
